Pruning is the process of removing diseased or unproductive parts of a plant. It can also be used to shape a plant to enhance the yield and quality of flowers. An improperly pruned plant can become diseased and grow in undesirable directions. Here is a list of the top four kinds of pruners and their function in the garden.

  • Loppers: This pruner is best used on small twigs and branches. The lopper is a manual pruner tool and has extremely large handles that give good leverage. Most lopper pole length is two feet but there are other long ones that can extend up to six feet. The longer the length the higher the branches you can reach. The blades come in a variety of curved, straight or combined.
  • Shears: If shaping hedges is what you wish to do, then get a pair of serrated shears to do the job. The serrated blades will always cut through heavy branches better than the straight blades. Go for an ergonomically designed shear that puts minimum impact on your hands. Most shears have rubber padding on the handle to facilitate pruning.
  • Fiberglass pole pruner kit: This is a kit that consists of a long fiberglass pole and pruner head. Different pruner heads can be attached depending on the kind of work needed. These units are extremely light weight, easy to use and detachable. Most pruning kits include the tree pruner and telescoping pole pruner.
  • Electric pole pruners: If there are extremely thick branches in your garden, then you are going to need an electric pole pruner. This unit puts minimum pressure on your hands and can easily cut branches that are up to six inches in diameter.
