If you’re in the market to buy a shovel, you might be surprised at the variety available. However, there are certain features that you need to look for in shovels. Here is my ‘top five’ list of things to know about the shovel:

  1. The Blade - A cheap quality shovel will have a blade that bends when you start to dig look for one that is sharp and strong. A cheap blade will not only exert a lot of pressure on your back, but it also increases the amount of pressure you have to exert.
  2. The Handle - Look for a handle that feels comfortable in your hand when you grip it. You should be able to move it around easily.
  3. Flat Edge - Make sure the blade has a flat edge on top. This part is important because it will give better leverage for your foot if you need to stamp down.
  4. Round Point Shovel - One of the most basic and commonly used shovels in the world. The reason for its popularity is its multi utility. It can be used for digging holes, moving soil and even lifting plants. It can also serve as a hammer in a tight situation.
  5. Electric Snow Shovel - For those who do not want to over exert themselves. This is ideal for large homes and can clear almost 300 pounds of snow per minute. It is also known as the sleigh shovel in some places.
