When it comes to watering your garden, there are three factors to take into consideration:
1. Types of plants
2. Kind of soil
3. Supply of water
These factors need to be considered in order to find a suitable time and duration to water your garden. If you have a substantially large garden with different kinds of plants they might need different amounts of water. Therefore you need to consider different kinds of watering equipment. Using a garden hose to flush your garden might in fact do more harm then good. Having attachments like spray nozzles and watering wands will produce a much better effect.
Nozzles
A nozzle is a device that is used to control the rate of flow, direction and speed of the water. The nozzle can be attached to the end of the hose or it can be used along with a water wand. There are several different types of nozzles to choose from. The kind of spray that emerges from the nozzle depends on the width and number of holes. Some spray nozzles that are used to water rose gardens have 14 holes, while others can have as many as 76 holes. These will give you an almost misty kind of spray. Some fountain nozzles have a shut off mechanism with it enabling you to shut off the water supply directly from the nozzle. You can also get a set of nozzles with different spray heads that can be replaced when watering different sections of your garden. I recommend the Dramm nine pattern revolver garden hose nozzle. It has die cast metal valves, a fiberglass reinforced lever and nine different spray patterns.
Wands
A quality garden hose and a watering wand are considered to be the workhorse combo of any garden. These will take the difficulty out of this chore. A good quality watering wand has three parts:
1. Shut off valve
2. Extension tube
3. Nozzle
Look for valves made of copper rather than plastic as they are far more durable. Also copper hardly tends to rust or rot after prolonged use. The breaker or the nozzle should also be replaceable so that you can clean it of the debris that may accumulate. High quality wands have an ergonomically designed body which has minimum impact on the hands. Also telescoping wands are available which can be altered to 6 different spray patterns. I recommend the Gardena soft spray watering wand. It has an adjustable flow control for gentle watering, rust proof spray sieve and an on off trigger with a lock.
Remember of course that we currently face an environmental crisis and many places have less than accurate water supply. Please use water sparingly.
