Robert Egan the owner of Cubby’s Restaurant (famous for its spicy barbecue sauce) located in Hackensack, New Jersey stumbled into a unique relationship with North Korea through his efforts to find US soldiers missing since the Vietnam war. After Egan made several trips to Pyongyang in pursuit of missing American soldiers from the war, he invited the North Korean U.N. Ambassador to try some world renown barbecue at his restaurant and thus a friendship was created.Egan went so far as to help the ambassador acquire a new set of teeth in the states. The ambassador had a severe toothache, but was wary of submitting to American health care. Yet the ambassador trusted Egan enough for him to suggest visiting an oral surgeon. The ambassador under went a general anesthetic while the doctor extracted twelve teeth and inserted thirteen implants.
Egan claims that it was through this friendship that North Korea drew back from confrontation three years ago over its illegal nuclear weapons program. Several US officials have publicly praised his efforts in keeping an open channel of communication.
