Throughout the summer I use hanging garden planters on my deck. It’s soothing to the eye and to the mind. There’s nothing fancy about the whole thing. In fact, its miles away from some of the exquisite lawns of the suburbs but its nice and I like the look. Obviously, using a garden hose to water an area that small would not only waste too much water but it also might damage the plants. I could have setup a sprinkler system or a garden hose with a nozzle or a drip system but I found the best solution was also the simplest and the solution was the old fashioned well trusted watering can.

Sure the average person who isn’t really interested in the aesthetic design or functionality of their garden might simply look for the cheapest thing to get the job done. However, a true gardener wanting to make the right choice is going to look for three very important things when making their decision.

The first factor a gardener will look for is the functionality. A good watering can must be able to water the plants without spilling out all over the place. You don’t want the can to spill water out of the pot and give you a massive back ache. The best kinds have two handles that need to be in a comfortable grip and position, the upper handle and the backward handle. It should also have a removable perforated attachment at the end of the spout which is called the rose. A removable one is preferred since this allows you to remove and clean it if it gets blocked.

The next aspect the gardener takes into consideration is the material. If you like the old rustic charm of a watering can, then you can opt for galvanized metal. They look and retain the yesteryear charm of indoor watering cans and beats plastic watering cans anytime. A perfect example of this is the Norwesco twelve quart galvanized garden watering can, which is degradable, rodent proof, fire proof, and recyclable. Plastic might be light weight and cheap, but it can never give the same old fashioned look as the galvanized metal. However, if you do decide to go with plastic you should take a look at the Dynamic Design 2 Gallon Garden Poly Watering Can, which allows easy filling from sink or spigot. It has a long, drip resistant spout and a water level indicator allows accurate mixing of plant food and fertilizer. Copper watering cans are also quite popular as they do not rust as easily as galvanized iron.

Finally, the gardener will look to the overall design of the watering can. Today, mini watering cans and fish watering cans come in all sorts of colors, materials and finishes. You can choose a theme based design that adds to the over all ambience of your garden no matter where it sits. Watering cans based on fruit are a wonderful addition to any garden.

The most important part of making the decision on which watering can to choose is your personal preference. No one else should determine your happiness in the garden. Therefore you must make your own choice of watering cans.
