These tip suggestions come from our friends over at “The Biggest Loser”. Here are the top five ways to keep your diet in check during the barbecue season.

1. Turkey over Beef: 4 oz of extra lean turkey will save you 150 calories and 20 grams of fat when compared to 4 oz ground beef, which contains 288 calories and 23 grams of fat. 4 oz of lean turkey is only 122 calories and 1.5 grams of fat.

2. Mustard over Mayo: a tablespoon of Dijon mustard only has 18 calories and absolutely no added sugar or fat. Ketchup has the same calories as mustard but can be loaded with hidden sugar.

3. Lose the Bun: While you won’t look as cool as everyone else those white flour buns they are chewing down is adding a ton of calories. Look for the whole grain fiber buns for added health.

4. Here Fishy: Try cooking salmon, halibut or mahi mahi on the grill. These fish tend to be thicker and firmer therefore easier to flip on the grill. You can still cook a more delicate fish but you’ll need a special basket like the deluxe non-stick fish basket sold at Market Merchants.

5. Grill Your Fruit: Once the heat has cooled down from the main meal cooking try throwing raw peach, pear halves, or pineapple slices onto the grill. Make sure the fruit isn’t overly ripe or they will stick to the grill and burn.
